Kelly Sotherton Injures Back And Is Out For Rest Of Season

British heptathlete Kelly Sotherton has had her season brought to a quick finish as her old back problem has come back. She won bronze in the Athens Olympics in 2004 but has since had a few injuries. In 2006 she discovered a fracture in her back just after winning gold medal in the Commonwealth games. She had a better year in 2007 but struggled a little in the Beijing Olympics and finished in 4th place.

Last year she developed a heel injury which meant that she could not compete in the 2009 World Championships.

Kelly will be 35 when the London 2012 Olympic games starts, so she could work on her fitness over the next 2 years and try to overcome her injuries, but it will be a difficult time. In the last few years Jessica Ennis has been performing very well, winning Gold medal in the World Heptathlon Championship in 2009 and also Gold for the World Indoor Pentathlon earlier this year.

It would be wonderful if they could both compete in the London Games in 2012, however, it looks more likely that Ennis will be carrying the flag alone for Britain’s women.
