James DeGale in the Beijing Olympic Final

Britain’s James DeGale (75kg) has beaten Ireland’s Darren John Sutherland in the men’s middleweight boxing to go through to the final. He will fight Cuba’s Emilio Correa Bayeaux for a chance to win Britain another gold medal.

James DeGale and Darren John Sutherland have fought six times in the last four years, and Sutherland had won four of those previous bouts. Sutherland won a Bronze medal for Ireland. Sutherland announced today that he is going to turn professional, the Olympics semi-final being his last fight as an amateur boxer.

James DeGale is a southpaw from London, and fights as a switchhitter, meaning that he can fight with a right stance also. He says that his boxing inspiration comes from world champions Joe Calzaghe and Floyd Mayweather.

Although the Beijing Olympic Games are rapidly coming to a close, there are still medals to be won by Great Britain. The promising news is that after the excellent fighting from the British boxers in these game, Team GB have a good chance of winning some good medals in the London 2012 Games.
