Beth Tweddle in 2009Some of Britain’s finest contenders for the London 2012 Olympic games saw great success at the European Artistic Gymnastic Championships.

Beth Tweddle won 2 gold medals on the final day of the event with an outstanding performance on both the uneven bars and on the floor events that ensured that she remained number 1 in these events since winning gold in Milan last year. This was Beth’s third European gold on the uneven bars, she won with a score of 15.875. She also scored 14.825 on the floor which won her another gold medal.

After the event she was extremely pleased with her results and is confident that she will be able to perform well in the Olympic Games in 2012.

“I’m ecstatic, after the amazing team silver yesterday there was a temptation to celebrate but we know we had to get some rest and focus on today’s finals. It’s always easier to chase a Champion than to be the Champion so I had to keep focused and do the job, and I’m really happy, it’s been a fantastic week for everyone.” Beth Tweddle, Birmingham, May 2010.

Other British gymnasts did well, including Becky Downie for the uneven bars, Niamh Rippin on the floor and Nicole Hibbert in the vault. In total Britain won 15 medals in the European Championships that were held in Birmingham.
