The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) today marked 99 days until the inaugural Youth Olympic Games with celebrations across the city.
For the next 99 days Singapore will be celebrating all things related to the Olympic Games and will be holding many ceremonies to unveil new venues when they are completed. There is also a concert planned where Singapore’s most popular bands will play, including Taufik Batisah, Hady Mirza and Electrico.
“As we move closer to the start of the Games, I can feel the excitement and buzz in the community growing with each passing day. Many National Olympic Committees and International Federations are finalising their team preparations for Singapore 2010, and I am confident that SYOGOC and the IOC are ready to welcome the world to Singapore for this historic event.” Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee
The Youth Games are being held for 2 weeks in August, from the 14th to the 26th. There will be 3600 athletes participating in the Youth Games. The Youth Games are open to athletes from 14 to 18 years of age. There will be 26 different events, all of which will also appear in the London 2012 Games. The Youth Games often reveals the up and coming talent, as the 18 year olds will be 20 come the London Games.
Team GB is hoping to be able to send a full team to show the wide range of talent that British Olympic Contenders have to offer. Team GB is still being put together as the qualification period is ongoing. Team GB will be announced in July, just a month before the Games commence.
Singapore 2010 aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. Young athletes will participate in high-level sporting competition and in a Culture and Education Programme (CEP). CEP will raise participants’ awareness of the Olympic values and topics such as healthy lifestyles and the fight against doping.
The International Olympic Committee marked the milestone date by releasing ‘99 seconds’, video interviews with Youth Olympic Games Ambassadors Michael Phelps and Yelena Isinbayeva.
